President Donald Trump has reportedly reconsidered his stance on <\/span>Anthropic<\/span> as a national security threat.<\/span><\/p>\n

The White House earlier this month ordered the artificial intelligence startup to get government approval before permitting <\/span>foreign individuals<\/span>, companies or nations from accessing its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in an <\/span>interview<\/span> with Axios published Friday (June 19), Trump said he thought Anthropic had \u201cbehaved very responsibly\u201d in response to the administration\u2019s order.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe responded to us very quickly, because you know it\u2019s tremendous liability,\u201d Trump said of Anthropic CEO <\/span>Dario Amodei<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked if he believed Anthropic and Amodei are a national security threat, Trump said, \u201cWell, not now. But a week ago, maybe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The president said he wouldn\u2019t shut down Anthropic, arguing that the U.S. is beating China in the AI race. \u201cI would, but I\u2019m not sure I have to do that. I think so far it\u2019s been very responsible,\u201d he said in the interview.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was also asked if he would consider using the Defense Production Act to regulate or control the AI industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would, but I\u2019m not sure I have to do that,\u201d Trump added. \u201cI think so far it\u2019s been very responsible. Actually, it was a competitor and a part owner that turned Anthropic in. They didn\u2019t like what they were doing. They were very concerned. Think of it, it\u2019s part owner, and I think it worked out very well, I think.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The ban on the Mythos and Fable models follows a <\/span>dispute<\/span> between Anthropic and the Pentagon that began when the company sought to halt the use of its technology for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When contract talks collapsed, the Defense Department declared Anthropic a <\/span>supply chain risk<\/span>. Anthropic is suing to overturn that designation.<\/span><\/p>\n
