When it comes to gaming, Linux is still a bit behind Windows. Don’t get me wrong; it has come a very long way in the space of a decade, turning the OS from a productivity-only distro to a serious competitor in the gaming scene. But there are a handful of problems that prevent people from making the jump.<\/p>\n

One of them is with KDE Plasma. On its own, KDE Plasma is a fantastic desktop environment that makes Linux more accessible than it has ever been. But gamers have noticed a strange mouse input delay with KDE Plasma, and nobody was really sure what was causing it. Fortunately, someone performed a deep dive to see what the problem was and ended up finding not one problem, but three.<\/p>\n

The story starts when one Jakub Oko\u0144ski noticed that using the cursor on KDE felt strange compared to Windows. He noted that changing some settings would sometimes make the mouse feel ‘floaty’ and weird. So, as all good tinkerers do, he decided to get to work solving this weird problem.<\/p>\n

To start, he set up the hardware:<\/p>\n

Measurements were done on two computers: a desktop and a laptop. They each have an Ada-generation RTX card and a Zen 4 CPU. I used virtually the same NixOS config on both, along with an up-to-date Windows 11 install on each. They were connected to the same display for most of the tests: an LG C1 at 120 Hz over HDMI.
