Google is rolling out a new hand-gesture verification system in reCAPTCHA for some users, which may ask for camera access and require a few simple movements to verify that you are human. The new mechanism is designed to tackle increasingly sophisticated bots that can bypass standard CAPTCHA, which typically involves recognizing objects in images or solving opaque puzzles.<\/p>\n

According to Google, the system analyzes a short video of the user\u2019s hand and outputs 21 coordinates for tracking the gestures, using hand joint landmarks to recognize the movements.<\/p>\n

In a blog post on the Google Cloud Defense page, the company states that the video is not linked to the user\u2019s identity, audio is never recorded, and frames are deleted after the verification is complete.<\/p>\n

The company notes that this option strengthens \u201clive\u201d detection, helping sites combat automated account creation, credential-stuffing attacks, and other forms of online fraud.<\/p>\n

The system was significantly worse than traditional CAPTCHA because it relied on a camera; users said they would prefer image-based tasks and did not want the new method, which they described as frightening, of verification.<\/span><\/p>\n
