{"id":274162,"date":"2026-06-16T01:59:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T05:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news-you-need.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/16\/isaac-asimov-ai-and-the-goals-of-financial-regulation\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T04:55:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T08:55:32","slug":"isaac-asimov-ai-and-the-goals-of-financial-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news-you-need.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/16\/isaac-asimov-ai-and-the-goals-of-financial-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Isaac Asimov, AI, and the Goals of Financial Regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbva.com\/en\/economy-and-finance\/isaac-asimov-ai-and-the-goals-of-financial-regulation\/\">Isaac Asimov, AI, and the Goals of Financial Regulation<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbva.com\/en\/economy-and-finance\/isaac-asimov-ai-and-the-goals-of-financial-regulation\/\">https:\/\/www.bbva.com\/en\/economy-and-finance\/isaac-asimov-ai-and-the-goals-of-financial-regulation\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Publish Date: <a href=\"publish_date]\">2026-06-16 01:59:00<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source Domain: <a href=\"www.bbva.com\">www.bbva.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To shed light on this debate, <strong>I propose the following exercise: imagine that financial regulation and supervision were entrusted to an artificial intelligence system and that its mandate had to be defined through an instruction or \u201cprompt,\u201d<\/strong> to use the technical term. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">One option<\/span> would be to set a single objective: preserving financial stability. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A second alternative<\/span> would be to add a secondary mandate: preserving financial stability and, without prejudice to that objective, championing the competitiveness of the financial sector and its contribution to economic growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This second formulation closely resembles the objectives of monetary policy:<\/strong> under Article 2 of the ECB Statute, <strong>the ECB\u2019s primary objective is to maintain price stability<\/strong>, <strong>but, without prejudice to that objective, it shall support the general economic policies of the Union<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The main argument for introducing a secondary objective is that European regulatory and supervisory agencies cannot disregard the competitiveness of the financial sector and of the wider European economy.<\/strong> In economics, situations involving multiple equilibria are common: when plotting two variables on a graph, it may be possible to achieve the same value for one variable with two or more different values for the other. In this case, let\u2019s imagine that the same degree of financial stability could coexist either with a highly competitive economy or with a weakly competitive one.
