India\u2019s Tata Electronics has come under regulatory scrutiny after a state pollution authority alleged that wastewater discharged from its iPhone components facility contaminated nearby farmland and groundwater.<\/p>\n

According to a Reuters report, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued a notice warning of potential action, including a shutdown, unless the company provides a satisfactory explanation for the alleged violations.<\/p>\n

The plant in question is located in Hosur, in southern Tamil Nadu, and manufactures back panels and other components for Apple\u2019s iPhone. The facility is a key part of Apple\u2019s strategy to diversify production away from China, making Tata Electronics one of its important suppliers in South Asia after Foxconn.<\/p>\n

The controversy follows months of complaints by local farmers, who alleged that wastewater from the factory was contaminating agricultural land and nearby open wells. As per the TNPCB, these complaints triggered a series of five inspections conducted between December 2025 and May 2026.<\/p>\n

Findings from these inspections, detailed in a regulatory notice dated May 25 and reviewed by Reuters, pointed to wastewater being discharged into a rainwater harvesting pond within the factory premises. The overflow from this pond allegedly seeped into surrounding areas, contaminating \u201cgroundwater in the open wells located in the adjacent agricultural lands,\u201d the notice stated.<\/p>\n

The regulator further noted that Tata had not implemented corrective measures despite earlier directives issued in December 2025, raising concerns about compliance with environmental standards.<\/p>\n
