In election years, Michiganders are no\u00a0strangers\u00a0to being flooded with campaign ads. Billboards, TV and radio spots,\u00a0social media posts and more promoting candidates and movements\u00a0fill whatever medium campaign\u00a0operatives think\u00a0will reach the most prospective voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And in a\u00a0growing\u00a0number\u00a0of races across the country, campaigns are turning to generative artificial intelligence to\u00a0bolster, or even just entirely create, their ads.\u00a0Using AI can be quicker and cheaper than\u00a0producing\u00a0a traditional ad and does allow for some creative liberties \u2014 but in Michigan, state law mandates campaigns disclose when they use AI in political materials.<\/p>\n

Take a few recent social media posts\u00a0from state Sen. Aric Nesbitt, a Porter Township Republican among those running in the Tuesday, Aug. 5, statewide primary election with hopes to become Michigan’s governor: On June 9, he\u00a0posted\u00a0an AI-generated\u00a0campaign video\u00a0on social media\u00a0featuring the\u00a0likeness of several politicians, including himself, Democratic gubernatorial\u00a0candidate and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers and others.\u00a0Another\u00a0video\u00a0posted\u00a0on Nesbitt\u2019s Facebook page includes\u00a0likenesses of\u00a0Whitmer, Benson and\u00a0Fay Beydoun, a former nonprofit leader who was charged with a series of crimes\u00a0in May related to a $20 million state grant.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Also included in both videos is\u00a0a likeness\u00a0of\u00a0Attorney General Dana Nessel. At the tail end of each spot, the Nessel-likeness\u00a0informs viewers that the video was created entirely by artificial intelligence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s\u00a0because Michigan is among the states that has\u00a0taken steps to put guardrails around the use of AI in political campaign materials. In 2023, Whitmer signed legislation that requires\u00a0politicians and their campaigns to\u00a0disclose\u00a0when AI is used in\u00a0political advertisements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
