While many acknowledge the value of tools that help law enforcement solve crimes, others have expressed unease about the broader implications of widespread surveillance.

The sheriff’s office began using Flock cameras last September, but Sheriff Richie Simmons and Capt. Christopher Poole said the rollout was intentionally low-key. Neither the sheriff’s office nor county government made announcements about the cameras, citing concerns that publicity could prompt criminals to avoid monitored areas or vandalize the equipment. Additionally, there are concerns that some residents worried about their privacy may attempt to damage the cameras.

In all, the sheriff’s office has 25 Flock cameras, 23 that are stationary and two that are mobile, Poole said.

“The sheriff’s office used $96,000 in drug asset forfeiture money to pay for the cameras and software,” Poole said.

The sheriff’s office expects to spend $76,000 annually on software and maintenance.

The system operates by capturing images of license plates and vehicles. Law enforcement agencies can input specific information — such as a tag number or vehicle type — associated with a suspect, and when a matching vehicle passes a camera, the system sends an alert.

The Flock cameras are…

Source

Flock cameras spark debate over safety and privacy in Davidson County | Crime https://www.the-dispatch.com/news/crime/flock-cameras-spark-debate-over-safety-and-privacy-in-davidson-county/article_3e4ef856-d358-5a3a-a891-2a2f213498b7.html Publish…

https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/the-dispatch.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/2/d9/2d9c5bdd-a504-5fcc-8f95-a7e048e4c64c/6a29e5f5d2deb.image.jpg?crop=999%2C526%2C0%2C70
[16

post-271006","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-privacy
