Apple has so far sat out the folding phone party, while major rivals\u2014Google, Motorola, and Samsung in the US, with many more abroad\u2014take massive bites of the hinged-handset pie. As a phone expert, I’ve tested intriguing foldables, from the not-so-great Microsoft Surface Duo to the more successful Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series, as well as the Google Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr lines. But where’s Apple’s fun and flexible iPhone Flip?<\/p>\n

I vividly remember when, in 2019, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak told Bloomberg that “[Apple] is not the leader in areas like the folding phone, and that worries me because I really want a folding phone.” Well, if the rumors are anything to go by, it looks like The Woz is finally getting his wish. Whispers about Apple’s foldable project date back to 2016, but this year, reports have skyrocketed, with signs pointing to a September launch.<\/p>\n

As someone who’s obsessed with both iPhones and foldables, I’m excited these worlds may potentially collide in an ambitious new piece of hardware that may make Apple’s rivals sweat.<\/p>\n

Foldable iPhone: All the Credible Rumors So Far<\/h2>\n

Based on Apple’s long-standing iPhone-naming conventions, you may expect the company to announce the iPhone 18 Fold. However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, one of the most credible Apple leakers, there may be a twist: Apple might go with iPhone Ultra, instead.<\/p>\n

Gurman claims the foldable is still on track to arrive later this year, despite chatter about manufacturing snags. That said, the so-called iPhone Ultra is expected to launch in September alongside the iPhone 18 series.<\/p>\n

What will Apple’s foldable look like? Don’t expect to open it vertically like the Samsung Z Flip 7 or the Motorola Razr Ultra. Instead, it will open from side to side, like a book, revealing a larger display that’s roughly the same size as the iPad mini. Sadly, it won’t be like the skinny Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is thinner than some regular phones.<\/p>\n
