Running Linux on them requires support for Apple-specific boot mechanisms, firmware behavior, graphics, audio, storage, power management, and other hardware components. Asahi Linux fills that gap, giving users a native Linux option on machines that otherwise ship with macOS.

The current warning concerns macOS 27 Golden Gate, which is still in beta. According to the Asahi Linux team, Apple has changed how the boot picker and Startup Disk applications detect valid OS boot volumes. When either tool is used from macOS 27, an installed Asahi Linux partition no longer appears as a bootable option.

The team says it believes the behavior is a bug and has filed a report with Apple under FB22994760. Users who have already installed the beta and noticed that their Asahi partition has disappeared are being told not to panic, as the partition and data remain intact.

The problem is access, not deletion. The Asahi installation is still present on disk, but macOS 27’s boot selection tools no longer show it as a valid startup volume. That leaves affected users unable to boot into their existing Linux installation through the normal Apple Silicon boot path.

Asahi Linux says users who have already upgraded may need to use macOS 26 or older to restore access to their Linux installation. The project has also patched its installer to prevent use from macOS 27 for now, reducing the chance that more users run into the same issue while the cause is still being investigated.

For now, the advice is simple: Asahi Linux users should avoid macOS 27 Golden Gate beta.
