The footage was reportedly used in online content promoting dating and pick-up coaching services. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Beyond that specific issue, the boom of wearable devices combining cameras and microphones raises important questions regarding privacy and data protection. Last year alone, seven million pairs of Meta smart glasses were sold.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Last week, liberal MEPs wrote to the European Commission to ask what could be done at European level given the risks involved. Read the parliamentary question <strong>here<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Veronika Cifrov\u00e1 Ostriho\u0148ov\u00e1 MEP<\/strong> (Progres\u00edvne Slovensko, SK) commented on the issue at hand: <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI-enabled smart glasses are evolving rapidly, but many people remain unclear about what the legal boundaries are. I believe the European Commission and the European Data Protection Board should provide guidance on how existing EU rules, especially the GDPR, apply to these devices. At the same time, it is unacceptable for any woman to worry about being secretly filmed in public and having those images shared online. Where privacy rights are breached or civil and criminal laws are broken, authorities must be able to act swiftly and effectively.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Abir Al-Sahlani MEP <\/strong>(Centerpartiet, SE) continued, pointing out the privacy concerns for all: <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs usual, women fall victim first, but this is not just a women\u2019s issue, it is a general privacy concern. In March this year, the Swedish privacy watchdog issued guidance. In May, the French one issued an action plan and started sharing best practices. A coordinated approach is needed.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Yvan Verougstraete MEP<\/strong> (Les Engag\u00e9s, BE) warned that a new generation must be protected amid emerging technology. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtificial intelligence is opening extraordinary opportunities, but innovation can only succeed if citizens trust it.
