Why Project Solara’s biggest surprise isn’t AI, It’s Android<\/p>\n

Microsoft’s launching of Project Solara at Build 2026 introduced a new vision for AI-powered devices, but one detail stood out more than the wearable badges and cloud agents.<\/p>\n

Instead of relying on Windows, the company built the platform’s operating system on the Android Open Source Project.<\/p>\n

Why Project Solara abandoned Windows for lightweight AI hardware?<\/h2>\n

Project Solara is the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP), a lightweight operating system based on Android. <\/p>\n

According to Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group, traditional Windows architecture carries decades of legacy features and hardware requirements that make it less suitable for wearables and embedded devices.<\/p>\n

Through adoption of the Android framework, Microsoft will be able to configure its devices to perform AI tasks efficiently by eliminating the need for unnecessary processing and memory capacity common in PCs.<\/p>\n

There is also what Microsoft refers to as the “agent-first approach”. Unlike opening various applications, users engage with AI agents that can handle jobs on both devices and cloud platforms.<\/p>\n

This is possible because most AI agents operate via Azure; hence, the device will act as a conduit for cloud-based intelligence instead of being self-sufficient computing devices.<\/p>\n

An agent dispatcher and task manager are among the technologies under development.<\/p>\n

In order to show the platform, Microsoft showcased designs for an AI hub that is meant to be mounted on the desk and a wearable badge that targets healthcare professionals, retail employees, and field service workers.<\/p>\n

Qualcomm and MediaTek will supply the chips for future gadgets, whereas OEMs will manufacture the hardware. Microsoft itself won\u2019t be selling its devices.<\/p>\n

Microsoft already has a pilot program with organisations such as Best Buy, CVS Health, Target, Levi\u2019s, and…<\/p>\n
