Walk out and ask the same people what any of it delivers and the answers get murkier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"new_font\">WPP is trying to cut through that. The holding company&#8217;s acquisition of InfoSum, the data collaboration platform, is its argument that the rest of the industry has been solving for the wrong thing. Not data collection. Not even data activation. The bet is on signals and on keeping data exactly where it already lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"new_font\">Richard Knott, SVP APAC at InfoSum, put it plainly when we spoke to him. &#8220;All of the other agency groups are very focused on identity and creating large centralised identity graphs or identity spines or whatever you want to call them. WPP is very focused on decentralised federated learning because we believe that for the AI world, identity will always have an important role but ultimately it&#8217;s not as important as signals. Signals are what our AI feeds on and is where it gets its insight from.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"new_font\">The difference is more consequential than it sounds. Identity-based systems require every data point to resolve to a person. That works when it works and fails silently when it does not. A signals-based architecture does not need that resolution. It picks up data from wherever it exists, builds audience narratives without ever needing to match to an individual, and does all of it without the data leaving the client&#8217;s own environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"new_font\">That last part is the hinge of the entire InfoSum argument. &#8220;Because InfoSum does not require the movement of the data, it keeps that liability with the only person that has any control over that data, which is the person that collected it,&#8221; said Knott.<\/p>\n<p class=\"new_font\">In India, where the DPDP Rules have hardened the controller-processor liability framework, this is not a nice-to-have. Brands that pass data down an ad tech pipeline remain liable for whatever happens to it. InfoSum&#8217;s architecture sidesteps that entirely.
