COLUMBIA, S.C. (WBTV) – You can tell it\u2019s election season just by opening your social media feed. Political ads are everywhere as primary elections draw closer \u2014 but some of what you\u2019re seeing (and hearing) may not be real.<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence-generated political ads are becoming more common, and critics say rules haven\u2019t kept pace.<\/p>\n

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson told WBTV he was \u201cdisgusted\u201d after seeing an ad that appears to show him taking \u2014 and brushing off \u2014 a phone call from President Donald Trump. The problem: the ad looks and sounds like Wilson, but it wasn\u2019t actually him. It was created using AI.<\/p>\n

Wilson is among a growing number of state attorneys general calling for clearer standards governing how AI can be used in campaign ads, arguing it\u2019s needed to protect trust in the election process.<\/p>\n

AI political ads spreading nationwide<\/h3>\n

Political ads using AI have surfaced in races across the country \u2014 including contests in Los Angeles, congressional races in Texas, and statewide campaigns in South Carolina.<\/p>\n

Many of the ads include disclaimers noting AI was used, but experts say those warnings often don\u2019t go far enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese small disclaimers are almost invisible to most of us,\u201d said Alon Yamin, CEO and founder of CopyLeaks, a platform that helps detect AI-generated content.<\/p>\n

Yamin said the bigger issue is that many viewers assume what they\u2019re seeing is real.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people are still believing what they\u2019re seeing\u2026 People just assume that whatever they\u2019re seeing is still real,\u201d Yamin said.<\/p>\n

Patchwork rules \u2014 and none in the Carolinas<\/h3>\n

Yamin called the rise of deepfakes in political ads \u201cextremely dangerous,\u201d especially as technology becomes easier to use and harder to detect.<\/p>\n

At least 30 states have adopted some form of regulation around AI use in politics. North Carolina and South Carolina do not have comprehensive statewide policies covering the issue, according to Yamin.<\/p>\n
