For more than a century, the Catholic Church has tended to arrive at humanity’s great technological upheavals a step late, then stay for decades working out what they mean for the people living inside them. It did this with the factory age. In 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued Rerum Novarum, the letter that became the Church’s long answer to the Industrial Revolution and the workers it ground through. The interpreting took most of a century.<\/p>\n

This time the Church showed up earlier. Pope Leo XIV made artificial intelligence the subject of the first encyclical of his papacy, Magnifica Humanitas, more than 42,000 words, released by the Vatican on May 25. He signed it 135 years to the day after Rerum Novarum, and he took the name Leo as a deliberate echo of the pope who answered the last machine age, telling the world that the rise of AI had shaped the choice. He released it with an Anthropic co-founder standing beside him.<\/p>\n

What is inside is worth reading closely, and not only as moral teaching. Underneath the theology sits an unusually precise argument about who ends up holding power in the AI economy.<\/strong> That is the part most of the coverage walked past.<\/p>\n

What The Encyclical Actually Says<\/h2>\n

An encyclical is the most authoritative teaching a pope issues, the genre reserved for a pontificate’s defining concerns. Leo made his first one about artificial intelligence. The choice is the headline before a word of the text is read.<\/p>\n

For all its length, the argument is tight. The encyclical rests on a few pillars:<\/p>\n
