June 2 update. This post, first published on Monday, June 1, has been updated to reflect exactly which iPhones for which this update is relevant, and more details of the release. <\/p>\n

The new iPhone update is here, three weeks since the major-point iOS 26.5 release which landed on Monday, May 11. This large update is designed to fix issues rather than introduce major new features, including a problem with charging nearly drained batteries on iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Which iPhones Can Run iOS 26.5.1?<\/h2>\n

Unlike other iOS 26 updates, this one is available to five phones only: iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air.<\/p>\n

This is highly unusual, and reflects the fact that the update is all about one thing: fixing a battery bug on the phones for which it\u2019s designed. <\/p>\n

As such, it\u2019s no surprise that this is not a Background Security Improvements update as those are all about security fixes. Apple\u2019s support website specifies that \u201cthis update has no published CVE entries,\u201d that is, there are no security fixes here.<\/p>\n

How To Download And Install iOS 26.5.1<\/h2>\n

Since this is a regular update, not a Background Security Improvements version, updating takes a familiar course. <\/p>\n

Go to the Settings app on the iPhone and choose General, followed by Software Update. Here you\u2019ll find Download and Install, and it\u2019ll be downloaded promptly. It\u2019s a sizeable update, 17.44GB on my iPhone 17 Pro Max, but the size of the update will depend on how long ago you previously updated the phone. <\/p>\n

iOS 26.5.1 \u2014 What\u2019s In The Release<\/h2>\n

This is what\u2019s called a minor-point update, though it\u2019s much bigger than these usually are. There have been several in recent months which introduced new features and had zero security implications, and this one is all about fixes. <\/p>\n
