Getting the text out of the image was its own project. Once\u00a0we\u00a0had the text,\u00a0we\u00a0had to wrestle it into a format\u00a0we\u00a0could\u00a0actually work\u00a0with.\u00a0Then\u00a0we\u00a0needed\u00a0to translate it, if it was\u00a0not\u00a0in English\u00a0originally, as well as extract the key metadata. The structure of the document needed to be\u00a0evident\u00a0to the user,\u00a0as its position in the document provided key\u00a0context.<\/p>\n<p>Five years on,\u00a0a lot of this process is\u00a0in a much better state, in large part because of\u00a0improvements in Artificial Intelligence\u00a0(AI). Text extraction is dramatically easier. Translation, at least during the discovery phase where\u00a0we\u00a0are\u00a0just trying to work out whether a document belongs in the database, is fast and\u00a0usually good\u00a0enough,\u00a0though for the canonical version we add to PA-X, a hybrid approach with a human translator is still\u00a0what we rely on. The way we code agreements\u00a0is shifting\u00a0too, from copy-and-paste into category fields towards\u00a0AI-assisted\u00a0tagging\u00a0of\u00a0segments, which has opened the database up to new kinds of\u00a0analysis,\u00a0such as how provisions sit in relation to each other within an agreement\u2019s structure.\u00a0Generative AI is genuinely useful, particularly at helping people interact with complex, often non-AI systems in natural language\u00a0queries\u00a0at scale.<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0the\u00a0data pipeline\u00a0got easier.
