The Communist Party\u2019s mouthpiece newspaper, People\u2019s Daily, described artificial intelligence on Monday as a \u201cnew frontier\u201d for Chinese cooperation with the US, marking one of Beijing\u2019s clearest articulations yet of how it sees AI fitting into the bilateral relationship.<\/p>\n

The publication of the commentary in People\u2019s Daily follows agreements reached during US President Donald Trump\u2019s visit to China last month, when he and President Xi Jinping discussed AI and agreed to establish a government-level dialogue mechanism<\/span> on the technology.<\/p>\n

The commentary said the world did not want to see an \u201cAI Iron Curtain\u201d or efforts to carve up AI into rival spheres of influence.<\/p>\n

It argued that AI should remain an area where competition and cooperation coexisted, rather than becoming another front in broader technological decoupling.<\/p>\n

China and the United States, as two major AI powers, should work together to advance AI development and governance, it said, adding that the countries shared broad common interests in ensuring AI benefited humanity and served global development.<\/p>\n

While extending Beijing\u2019s long-running criticism of Washington\u2019s \u201csmall yard, high fence\u201d policies into the AI arena, the commentary accused \u201csome people\u201d in the US of viewing AI through a \u201czero-sum mentality\u201d and seeking to \u201cpoliticise, instrumentalise and weaponise\u201d the technology through investment restrictions, chip export controls and cloud-computing curbs.<\/p>\n

The bilateral AI dialogue arrangement disclosed on May 19 focused on the need for \u201cconstructive\u201d exchanges, but the two sides have framed the initiative differently.<\/p>\n
