When comparing Windows, macOS, and Linux, Microsoft’s offering has one gigantic advantage: 99.9% of PC apps work on it. While Linux has made a ton of headway with Wine, and macOS has its own exclusive apps, stuff just runs on Windows the vast majority of the time. If you want to run something like Claude Code, a new video game, or any powerful app, there’s an extremely good chance it has a native Windows app, and a very low chance that it has any others.<\/p>\n

However, Windows’ desire to be compatible with absolutely everything has also meant that it has to be compatible with absolutely everything. And this, unfortunately, does cause problems.<\/p>\n

\n Windows will likely never become an atomic or an immutable operating system

\n There’s just too much stuff relying on its current architecture

If you haven’t dipped a toe into the world of Linux operating systems, some distros are atomic and\/or immutable, usually both at the same time. Atomic means the operating system performs an A\/B update process where it downloads the new system files to a new branch. When you restart, the operating system ‘swaps tracks’ from the old system files to the new ones, which is a lot more reliable than updating system files directly. Immutable means that nothing, not even software, can edit the system files, thus keeping the operating system clean from tampering.<\/p>\n

These would both be amazing additions to Windows, but…<\/p>\n
