MIAMI (May 29, 2026) \u2014<\/span>\u00a0Researchers at Florida International University\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0emerging infrastructure technologies Friday for U.S. Department of Transportation leaders,\u00a0showcasing\u00a0innovations designed to improve bridge safety, extend the lifespan of aging\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0and strengthen inspection capabilities nationwide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event at FIU\u2019s Engineering Center included remarks from FIU President Jeanette M. Nu\u00f1ez and Seval Oz, assistant secretary for research and technology at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Members of Florida\u2019s congressional and state delegations also attended. The demonstration highlighted the role of federally supported university research in developing practical infrastructure solutions with national applications.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professors Atorod Azizinamini, director of FIU\u2019s Innovative Bridge Technologies\/Accelerated Bridge Construction-University Transportation Center (IBT\/ABC-UTC), and Kenneth G. Furton, executive director of the FIU Global Forensic and Justice Center, led the demonstrations. Azizinamini showcased a magnetic scanning system capable of detecting hidden corrosion inside bridge structures, along with Sprayable Ultra-High Performance Concrete, an advanced repair material developed at FIU that can be applied in the field to rehabilitate deteriorating infrastructure. The technology recently was used for the first time on a bridge project in Virginia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furton demonstrated one of the event\u2019s most visible technologies: specially trained dogs capable of detecting volatile organic compounds emitted by corrosion beneath surfaces.
