LOGAN – Changes to voter registration privacy laws approved by the legislature earlier this year have lead to increased work for county clerks heading into the June primary. According to the Lieutenant Governor’s office, SB 153 “removes most voter record privacy protections,” and the office sent letters to voters alerting them to the change.<\/p>\n

“It’s caused a lot of confusion,” Cache County Clerk Bryson Behm said on KVNU’s For the People program. “The law is pretty vague, so each county clerk’s office is interpreting the law differently. We’re talking to our lawmakers, and they understand the chaos this has caused for our office, and the voters.”<\/p>\n

Behm says he and other clerks have been in contact with state legislators about the increased workload public concern. Voters concerned about their information being made public by the law will need to submit a new “at risk” designation request. A printable form has been made available via the Utah Elections Office website, but Behm said he wanted to make it easier for voters, and the law gives him some latitude.<\/p>\n

“We said let’s put it on our website. If any voters have even an inkling that they qualify for this, the can go in and apply there, and we can do our due diligence,” Behm said. “Honestly, other than preparing for the June primary, this has taken over our office.”<\/p>\n

Behm says he and other clerks have been in contact with state legislators about the increased workload and public concern, but urged any voters with concerns to not hesitate to reach out to his office for help.<\/p>\n

Despite all this, Behm says his office is hard at work gearing up for the June primary.<\/p>\n

“For registered Republicans, ballots will be dropping in mailboxes the first week of June,” he said. “The County Attorney race has gotten a lot of attention, so we’re expecting pretty good turnout for the primary.”<\/p>\n
