The government office responsible for the technology that provides government services in Colorado is going through a major restructuring.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Colorado Governor\u2019s Office of Information Technology (OIT) announced it will cut 173 workers and change its organizational structure, saying the agency has not \u201cdelivered well enough\u201d over the last few years, according to a press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The office said the cuts will target management layers and internal coordination functions that have built up into a \u201ccomplex bureaucratic structure.\u201d The agency said it was not cutting technical work that other state agencies rely on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI reached the difficult but necessary conclusion that the way OIT has been operating will not get us to where we need to be,\u201d said David Edinger, chief information officer and executive director of OIT, in the announcement. \u201cWe are fundamentally changing how we operate, and that shift requires a restructure of our workforce. This is a reflection of our new strategic direction, not the talent or commitment of those affected by the layoff.\u201d<\/p>\n

As part of the restructuring, Gov. Jared Polis announced Edinger will step down as the organization\u2019s director. Sarah Tuneberg will be the new executive director beginning June 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the modernization strategy took shape, I recognized that executing it successfully requires a leader with deep, firsthand experience in modern delivery \u2014 someone who has already worked this way and can bring that experience to OIT\u2019s teams and agency partners,\u201d Edinger stated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The organization said it has begun to restructure into a modern operating model similar to ones seen at Google, Amazon and Microsoft, citing an example of combining hundreds of energy-savings programs into a single digital tool called the Colorado Energy Savings Navigator for Coloradans.
