The new Artificial Intelligence and Academic Innovation (AI2) Center aims to unify the university\u2019s disparate initiatives for AI research and education and promote collaboration and experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>LIU already offers bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s and doctoral degrees in AI, but the new initiative will also expand its Artificial Intelligence Competency Distinction credential \u2014 a nine-credit supplementary program offered to all students, with curriculum covering an introduction to AI tools, ethical considerations including bias and privacy, and a lab component to apply knowledge. Students in the program can work with postdoctoral mentors and use LIU\u2019s related research labs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AI\u00b2 Center reflects our vision for the future of higher education, one that prepares students across every discipline to thrive in an AI-driven economy,\u201d LIU President Kimberly Cline said in a public statement.<\/p>\n<p><span data-bsp-pv=\"4f8e492c-6f2f-390e-bc61-f176d3a37ab9\"\/><span data-bsp-pv=\"0000019e-6b2d-df62-abbe-ebad32140000\"\/><br \/>LIU is also investing in facilities to support AI research. Recently, the school\u2019s Post campus broke ground on a 40,000-square-foot science building where researchers will be able to apply artificial intelligence in medicine, including development of digital organ \u201ctwins,\u201d digital replicas of human organs used to simulate surgeries and test drugs.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a partnership with software company Dassault Syst\u00e8mes, another recently constructed lab facility at the university\u2019s Brooklyn campus supports 3D design, simulation and fabrication.<\/p>\n<p>According to the news release, the AI2 Center aims to advance interdisciplinary research and workforce development across disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtificial intelligence is not limited to one industry or one discipline.
