OpenAI\u2019s non-profit arm is committing at least $250 million to help workers disrupted by AI.<\/p>\n

This effort from the\u00a0OpenAI Foundation will cover grants, partnerships and \u201cdirect work\u201d to assist workers and economies impacted by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), according to a Wednesday (May 27)\u00a0news release.<\/p>\n

\u201cEconomic systems exist, in principle, to give people security, autonomy, and the ability to build purposeful lives. Too often they fall short,\u201d the foundation said in the release.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI is going to lead to huge economic changes as it makes previously scarce capabilities far more widely available, and there is deep uncertainty about how far and how fast they will go.\u201d<\/p>\n

The range of possibilities offers an opportunity to develop systems that let people live better, but the pace of change means \u201cthe window to get this right is shorter than we\u2019re used to, and the cost of getting it wrong is immense,\u201d the foundation added.<\/p>\n

The program will focus on investing in \u201cindependent measurement and forecasting infrastructure\u201d to gain a clearer picture of AI\u2019s effect on the economy, the release said.<\/p>\n

It will also help support workers and communities \u201cthrough near-term disruption,\u201d as well as bolstering efforts to organize \u201cpost-AI political economies and sharing economic gains broadly for people around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The announcement comes amid debate among AI advocates about what impact AI will have on the world\u2019s workers. Some foresee\u00a0widespread layoffs, with companies already\u00a0instituting job cuts\u00a0as they embrace the technology.<\/p>\n

Others say predictions of a \u201cjobs apocalypse\u201d are overblown. Among that group now is OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who recently walked back earlier predictions about AI-related job loss.<\/p>\n
