The real crisis, it found, could develop from a mismatch between the kinds of jobs that are growing and the skills and location of the available workers. This problem is being driven by the convergence of three big trends: the retirement of baby boomers, slower immigration, and AI reshaping white-collar work. If these factors are left unaddressed, Indeed predicts that unemployment could hit 8% by 2040. <\/p>\n<p>To help prevent such a crisis, there are a few things Indeed experts say employers and employees can do today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reevaluate job requirements and credential expectations <\/strong>to ensure the language used in job descriptions is helping your chances of attracting the best talent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invest now in training existing employees, <\/strong>as it\u2019s faster and less expensive than finding and developing new talent. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Expand recruiting <\/strong>to see how employees in adjacent fields can transfer their skills to your industry. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Employees:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Focus on human skills that AI cannot replace, <\/strong>and double down on highlighting those skills on your resume and in interviews. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t overwhelm yourself with AI literacy. <\/strong>Instead of trying to become an AI expert overnight, familiarize yourself with the technology tools that can complement the work you are already doing, such as organizing your emails and spreadsheets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay open to industries you may not have considered <\/strong>and explore whether your current skills provide a pathway into a high-growth field, or if you need to acquire new skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read here to learn more about what employers and workers can do now to ensure that an 8% unemployment rate doesn\u2019t become a reality. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subhead3-embed color-body bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">This is a published version of Forbes\u2019 <strong>Careers newsletter<\/strong>.
