(TNS) \u2014 Michigan\u2019s state government employees are now living in the \u201cWild West\u201d of artificial intelligence, and \u201cstate government can do whatever they want with AI,\u201d said state Rep.\u00a0Jaime Greene, R-Richmond.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody has really been revealing how they\u2019re utilizing AI right now,\u201d Greene said of the state\u2019s departments. \u201cIt\u2019s still kind of a mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pilot program would begin to address that, Greene said, studying generative AI use to make government more effective and ensure oversight.<\/p>\n


\u201cThere are clear benefits to generative AI, like improved efficiency, but we have to take precautions,\u201d Greene said. \u201cWe need to evaluate this technology closely before it is implemented broadly across state government.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bill was voted unanimously out of the\u00a0House Communications\u00a0and\u00a0Technology Committee\u00a0on\u00a0Tuesday, May 19. It\u2019s been referred to the\u00a0House Rules committee.<\/p>\n

The legislation comes as\u00a0Michigan\u00a0and other states begin to dive into AI regulation, and as the data centers that help them run\u00a0continue to dominate\u00a0the public conversation during a\u00a0high-profile election year.<\/p>\n

All 50 states,\u00a0Puerto Rico, the\u00a0Virgin Islands\u00a0and\u00a0Washington, D.C.\u00a0introduced legislation on the topic of AI in 2025, according to the\u00a0National Conference of State Legislatures.<\/p>\n

That includes several states setting funds aside for studies on the impact of AI on government, employment and healthcare.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0September 2024\u00a0survey\u00a0by\u00a0Ernst & Young LLP, referenced by the\u00a0National Conference of State Legislatures, found that 51% of federal, state and local government employees used an AI application daily or several times a week.<\/p>\n

As a result, there are \u201cnumerous\u201d pilot programs of AI by state governments across the country, according to\u00a0Kevin Frazier, a senior fellow at the technology nonprofit\u00a0Abundance Institute\u00a0who spoke during\u00a0May 12\u00a0testimony.<\/p>\n
