French bank\u00a0BNP Paribas\u00a0has reportedly launched a cybersecurity collaboration with partners including AI startup\u00a0Mistral.<\/p>\n

As Bloomberg News\u00a0reported\u00a0Tuesday (May 26), the effort is to help prepare for cybersecurity threats from artificial intelligence (AI) models such as Anthropic\u2019s Mythos.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe focus has been a lot on \u2018is Mythos accessible or not accessible?\u2019 but let\u2019s not forget there are other models from other firms that exist,\u201d\u00a0Marc Camus, BNP\u2019s chief information officer, told reporters at a news conference in Paris.<\/p>\n

The partnership comes as Mistral has been in talks with European banks about using its answer to Mythos, an AI model said to be able to find cybersecurity vulnerabilities at unprecedented levels. Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Mistral has been working on a\u00a0cybersecurity-focused AI model of its own.<\/p>\n

Anthropic rival OpenAI recently launched its \u201cDaybreak\u201d \u00a0initiative, designed to boost cyber defenses and, as CEO Sam Altman put it, \u201ccontinuously secure software.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Bloomberg notes, the rise of Mythos has alarmed banks, with Anthropic warning when the model debuted in April that its roll out was a \u201cwatershed moment for security\u201d because of its ability to uncover software security flaws.<\/p>\n

The model is not yet widely available, with Anthropic first wanting to test its abilities with a small group of companies, chiefly based in the U.S., an effort known as Project Glasswing.<\/p>\n

So far, Mythos has uncovered\u00a0more than 10,000\u00a0\u201chigh- or critical-severity vulnerabilities\u201d in some of the \u201cmost systemically important software in the world,\u201d Anthropic said in a report on Glasswing issued over the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cProgress on software security used to be limited by how quickly we could find new vulnerabilities,\u201d the report said. \u201cNow it\u2019s limited by how quickly we can verify, disclose, and patch the large numbers of vulnerabilities found by AI.\u201d<\/p>\n
