Speaking at a conference Tuesday (May 26), Sam Altman\u00a0acknowledged\u00a0that a \u201cjobs apocalypse\u201d triggered by artificial intelligence (AI) adoption has not come to pass.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m delighted to be wrong about this, I thought there would have been more impact on entry-level white-collar jobs being eliminated by now than has actually happened,\u201d said Altman, whose comments at a\u00a0Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) conference in Sydney were reported by Reuters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI now think I understand more about why it hasn\u2019t, and I\u2019m obviously grateful but that is an area\u00a0where my intuitions were just off,\u201d Altman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are like \u2018oh you could have saved the world a lot of\u00a0fear mongering\u00a0and a lot of doom and gloom\u2019 but at the time I was like \u2018I see this is a real risk we should probably talk about it\u2019 and it still may.\u201d<\/p>\n

Altman said he and his fellow executives had been \u201croughly right\u201d on the predictions they made when OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in 2022, but were \u201cpretty wrong\u201d on the technology\u2019s social and economic impact.<\/p>\n

The executive\u2019s comments came a little more than a week after\u00a0Amazon Web Services\u00a0CEO\u00a0Matt Garman\u00a0similarly rejected the idea of an AI-related job apocalypse.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody\u2019s entitled to their opinion, but I don\u2019t think that\u2019s true,\u201d Garman said when asked by The Wall Street Journal about predictions that artificial intelligence would cause unemployment on the level seen during the Great Depression.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s the potential to create massive value, and I think there\u2019s going to be\u00a0new and different\u00a0types of jobs,\u201d Garman said.<\/p>\n

As Reuters notes, a growing number of companies \u2014 such as\u00a0HSBC, Amazon, Standard Chartered and CBA \u2014 have announced that some of their jobs\u00a0would be replaced with AI.<\/p>\n
