Amazon has ditched Android for all future Fire TV Stick models and switched to its inferior in-house Vega operating system, which has caused many customers to abandon the platform entirely in favor of Android TV and Google TV devices. Despite this shift, the company just revealed Fire OS 16 as its newest Android-based operating system for Fire TVs. This comes just two months after the release of the first Fire TV running Fire OS 14, which is an uncharacteristically fast timeline for a new version of Fire OS. <\/p>\n

Fire OS 16, which is based on Android 16, has been revealed through newly published developer documentation for Fire TV devices. Amazon revealed its Android 14-based OS for Fire TVs last year, but deliberately avoided calling it Fire OS until it backpedaled a few months later and renamed it to Fire OS 14. There have since been three distinct Fire TV Smart TVs released with Fire OS 14, so you can probably expect the first Fire OS 16 devices sometime next year if a similar timeline is followed.<\/p>\n

This is all uncharacteristically fast for Amazon to support a new version of Android in Fire OS. Prior to Fire OS 14, there was usually a two to three year gap between an Android version being released and Amazon releasing an equivalent Fire OS version. If Fire OS 16 follows a similar release schedule as Fire OS 14, it may be in devices within a year of Android 16 being released.<\/p>\n

All of this speed is virtually worthless to Fire TV enthusiasts if Fire OS 16 is limited to smart TVs, as Fire OS 14 has been. While Amazon has indicated it will not release any new Android-based Fire TV Sticks, it has not said if a successor to the current Fire TV Cube will run Fire OS or Vega OS. A new 4th-generation Fire TV Cube running Fire OS 16 could be exactly what the company needs to win back the power users alienated by the switch to Vega OS.<\/p>\n
