Magnifica Humanitas is being read as a moral warning. It is also a positioning event for the AI industry \u2014 and Anthropic just won the dais.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Pope Leo XIV unveiled the first encyclical of his pontificate, a 42,300-word document titled Magnifica Humanitas, or “Magnificent Humanity,” on the moral architecture of an AI-shaped world. Standing beside him at the presentation was Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic.<\/p>\n

That tableau is the story behind the story.<\/p>\n

The Vatican spent a year preparing the most consequential religious statement on artificial intelligence ever issued. When it came time to choose an industry figure to share the dais, Leo did not invite OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, or any of the better-capitalized incumbents. He invited Anthropic \u2014 and specifically the researcher most identified with interpretability, the discipline of trying to understand what is actually happening inside large language models.<\/p>\n

The choice telegraphs the document’s posture. Magnifica Humanitas is not a panic, not a blanket condemnation, not a call to halt development. It is something more demanding: a structural critique that takes AI seriously as the defining political-economic transition of the next half-century, and stakes out a framework for governing it.<\/p>\n

The 1891 frame<\/h2>\n

Leo signed the letter on May 15 \u2014 the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, the 1891 encyclical by his namesake Leo XIII that became the foundational text of modern Catholic social teaching on labor.
