For years, Apple has built its empire on an infamously closed ecosystem. To connect one of the company\u2019s devices to something else, it needs to support Apple\u2019s proprietary technologies. But that walled garden is gradually being dismantled brick by brick, following regulatory pressure.<\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s adoption of the more universal USB-C format with the iPhone 15 was one of the more visible examples. One report claims that iPhone owners will soon have more control over how they wirelessly cast media via non-Apple technologies, like Google Cast, as part of iOS 27.<\/p>\n

The claim comes from Bloomberg\u2018s Mark Gurman, whose latest report alleges that iOS 27 will allow users to set a default casting technology of their choice other than AirPlay. It\u2019s reportedly part of Apple complying with the European Union\u2019s Digital Markets Act, which clamps down on anti-competitive behaviour by tech companies.<\/p>\n

If the report is accurate, iPhone users who have smart speakers or TVs that use Google-based software will be able to assign Google Cast as the default casting option. As of now, Apple AirPlay is the default casting option, while accessing other casting methods requires multiple taps to get through menus.<\/p>\n

In theory, it should make it easier for people to beam music, videos, and photos to non-Apple devices. It\u2019s already possible to cast content between Apple and Google Cast-compatible devices, but this would potentially reduce the friction.<\/p>\n

When will iOS 27 get the Google Cast update?<\/h2>\n

Gurman didn\u2019t specify when the tweaked Google Cast functionality would come to iOS 27. Apple is expected to announce its upcoming software updates at WWDC 2026, alongside a major AI revamp to Siri when the keynote airs on 9 June Australian time.<\/p>\n

The casting functionality could arrive with iOS 27 during the traditional September iPhone launch window. Alternatively, it could land as part of an incremental update after the main operating system upgrade drops.<\/p>\n
