Android users are being targeted by a new scam that could potentially costs them thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n

Geekspin.com was the first to report the long-running malware campaign that secretly signs users up for premium subscriptions with charges sent directly to their phone bills. <\/p>\n

How the scam works<\/h2>\n

Instead of typical scams that involve links on pop-ups or emails, the scam involves malicious apps that subscribe users to premiums SMS services. The services charge repeated small amounts through the phone\u2019s mobile carrier.<\/p>\n

The report said about 250 malicious Android apps are part of the global fraud campaign that\u2019s been active for nearly a year. The apps are disguised as popular ones such as Facebook, Instagram Threads, Tik Tok, Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto.<\/p>\n

Targets receive no warnings or noticeable confirmation, only finding out when the extra charges show up later on their bills. The sophisticated attack is set to check your SIM card first, GeekSpin reported. If the mobile network matches specific carriers, it activates. If not, is doesn\u2019t. <\/p>\n

Once activated, it can open hidden web pages and subscribe to services and stealing your information, including intercepting one-time activation codes.<\/p>\n

How to prevent the scam<\/h2>\n

The report said the best way to prevent being a victim is to pause before hitting \u201callow\u201d on apps that ask for access that it doesn\u2019t need, especially those linked to messaging or verification.<\/p>\n

And, as always, check your bills carefully and report any suspicious charges.<\/p>\n
