Two years ago, the company was valued between $4 billion and $15 billion: now, it\u2019s estimated to be worth over $350 billion, and everyone knows who Claude is.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s making news that Anthropic is making a big play in using Microsoft compute for its operations, to the tune of $30 billion in Azure infrastructure services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnthropic is in talks to rent servers powered by Microsoft-designed AI server chips, a coup for the software giant,\u201d report Aaron Holmes and Qianer Lu for The Information.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed\">Why Use Microsoft?<\/h2>\n<p>One question you might ask is, why wouldn\u2019t Anthropic, in its expansion push, just use Nvidia hardware in-house like so many other companies?<\/p>\n<p>I asked GPT, and this is what I came up with (I\u2019m paraphrasing);<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e6a397804f0a4a28f95a396c7f0f5a7f1\">cost control: NVIDIA GPUs are not only expensive, they\u2019re also supply-constrained.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ef6a4e5f241018bd6753c56f13b0a5bd2\">diversification: AI labs do not want total dependence on one vendor or supply chain.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"eefbc5a94fc74df5f141ec3746e34c832\">cloud integration: Microsoft\u2019s cloud ecosystem might offer specialized features and support custom services when it comes to large-scale AI serving workloads.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e3679f10f223ba6c31ec9fed658cb45f5\">negotiating leverage: Using alternatives gives companies leverage in pricing and partnerships with NVIDIA.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e585103c10e61c16ba5bb30d4929c68cc\">vertical optimization: Anthropic may tune models around particular hardware architectures for performance-per-watt advantages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Number four is interesting, in that I wonder whether that was part of the strategy at all.
