Apple will make history on May 23 as the iPhone 17 Pro’s cameras capture all the action between LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC in a Major League Soccer match \u2014 the first time the device has been used to film the entirety of a major professional live sporting event broadcast.<\/p>\n

The tech company announced that the iPhone 17 Pro will capture live footage throughout the match, including team warm-ups on the pitch, player introductions, in-net goal angles, and the atmosphere inside the stadium.<\/p>\n

Apple had used iPhones as part of a Major League Baseball broadcast \u2014 Boston Red Sox versus the Detroit Tigers \u2014 in September last year, but Saturday’s feed marks the first time a whole sporting event will be shown in its entirety, shot entirely on iPhone. The milestone earned recognition from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which added one of the iPhones used in the broadcast to its permanent collection.<\/p>\n

For the broadcast, 15 iPhone 17 Pros will be stationed across the venue. According to Apple, the small form factor of the iPhone allows the production team to shoot “dynamic new perspectives that bring viewers closer to the action.” The iPhone 17 Pro features three 48-megapixel Fusion cameras, offering the equivalent of eight lenses, and pro-level video capabilities including Apple Log 2, which captures a wider colour gamut in ProRes or HEVC codecs.<\/p>\n

The iPhone also made headlines when the film F1 was shot using a custom iPhone camera sensor to capture point-of-view (POV) sequences \u2014 offering a glimpse into how Apple is reshaping the landscape of professional filmmaking.<\/p>\n

This Saturday’s LA Galaxy versus Houston Dynamo FC match can be seen on Apple TV at 7.30 pm PT. The Tim Cook-led company entered a 10-year, $2.5 billion agreement in 2022 to exclusively broadcast every MLS and Leagues Cup match.<\/p>\n

The MLS regular season will pause from May 25 to July 16 for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.<\/p>\n
