The company has once again posted the sixth revision of its HDMI 2.1 FRL and DSC patches for the open-source AMGPU Linux driver. This is a major development for Radeon users on Linux, as FRL will allow HDMI to go beyond HDMI 2.0 bandwidth limits, supporting modern display modes such as high refresh 4K.

However, as spotted by Phoronix, the newest patch revision disables the FRL by default. So, users who want to use or test the HDMI 2.1 FRL support will need to boot the Linux kernel with “amdgpu. dc_feature_mask=0x400” parameter. This will manually enable FRL, but the implementation is not being treated as a default experience for the users.

It’s said that the reason is tied to the Variable Refresh Rate support. According to the report, the FRL is being disabled by default until HDMI VRR is ready. As enabling FRL without VRR is considered a regression for users with FRL-capable displays, AMD doesn’t want FRL to work by default. Once the VRR support lands, it’s expected that AMD will also enable FRL by default, which will make the manual kernel parameter a temporary requirement.

Nonetheless, AMD’s earlier patches that included HDMI 2.1 FRL support for its open-source AMDGPU driver paved the path for something that made AMD and Valve work with the HDMI forum for so long. Vavle’s involvement has been particularly crucial as the company has been pushing Linux gaming forward through SteamOS and Proton.

News Source: Free Desktop

About the author: Sarfraz Khan is a hardware…

Source

[48
71
post-251868","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-linux","tag-linux
