As a\u00a0teenage witness at the dawn of the MTV<\/span> era, Ed O\u2019Brien felt his heroes didn\u2019t make music \u2013 they descended from somewhere and delivered it. Yet having risen to those heights himself as Radiohead\u2019s guitarist, with multiple albums that rewrote what rock music could be, O\u2019Brien knows exactly how mortal he\u00a0is.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not long ago, he found himself near paralysis: exhausted, overwhelmed, unable to get out of bed. The long process of pulling out of what he calls a \u200b\u201c<\/span>dark night of the soul\u201d led to\u00a0<\/span>Blue Morpho, his first solo album in six\u00a0years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Huck caught up with the <\/span>Radiohead<\/span> guitarist under the bright Texas sun, the day after he offered the world its first glimpse of the music \u2013 a\u00a0premi\u00e8re at Austin\u2019s SXSW<\/span> of\u00a0<\/span>Blue Morpho: The Three Act Play, a\u00a0short film directed by his friend Kit Monteith. Moving through rivers, mountains, and forests in Wales, the film traces how O\u2019Brien found his way back: through nature, and through <\/span>music<\/span> that is gritty, glitchy, and hard-won.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a\u00a0strong current of technophobia running through society right now. With\u00a0<\/strong>OK<\/span> Computer,\u00a0<\/strong>you and your bandmates were way ahead. Now that everyone\u2019s talking about AI<\/span> and the effect that it\u2019s going to have, you suddenly come up with this album about how fragile humans are as machines. Was that a\u00a0conscious decision?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, it\u2019s not conscious at all. I\u00a0guess it\u2019s a\u00a0response to everything being a\u00a0human being walking on this planet and being sensitive to these things. I\u00a0don\u2019t think I\u2019m very good at being conscious about things or trying to make a\u00a0statement about anything. I\u00a0just can\u2019t do that. It\u2019s always got to be personal. Sometimes those things you capture, there\u2019s a\u00a0zeitgeist moment on it, but it\u2019s really just: What are you feeling?<\/span><\/p>\n

With the new album dropping along with the accompanying short film, you\u2019re being very open about your own mental health, has that been difficult?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
