South Portland is taking another look at its use of Flock cameras, as some residents raise concerns over privacy, data sharing, and surveillance.<\/p>\n

According to WGME, the South Portland Police Department already has seven Flock cameras installed throughout the city. The cameras use artificial intelligence to track license plates and are currently being used in several Maine communities.<\/p>\n

Police say the technology helps with investigations involving stolen vehicles, missing people, and other criminal cases. The department says the city has spent about $22,000<\/strong> on the cameras so far and believes they have been a worthwhile investment.<\/p>\n

South Portland Police Chief Dan Ahern said the license plate reader data is used only as an investigative tool and cannot be the sole reason for a stop, detention, or enforcement action.<\/p>\n

Still, some residents are worried about how the information could be used over time.<\/p>\n

Resident Lori Bowring-Michaud told WGME there is not enough infrastructure in place to guarantee the technology will not be abused in the future.<\/p>\n

The city has removed a proposal that would have extended the current Flock Safety contract beyond its 2027 expiration date. However, some residents want the city to go further and end the contract altogether.<\/p>\n

Resident Willys DeVoll told WGME he wants the cameras taken down, saying they are a negative for both society and the community.<\/p>\n

For now, it is unclear whether South Portland will renew the contract next year. City councilors say they plan to continue holding public meetings to hear residents\u2019 concerns and discuss the future of the cameras.<\/p>\n
