LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – The deaths of six migrants found inside a shipping container in Laredo are sparking new calls for added security at the border.<\/p>\n

At a city council meeting on May 18, leaders discussed bringing in more technology, including advanced scanning equipment.<\/p>\n

In response to the recent migrant deaths, Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevi\u00f1o introduced a motion requesting the city submit a letter supporting Congressman Henry Cuellar\u2019s push for federal funding aimed at expanding technology-based tools to enhance security measures in Laredo.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything together at the same time would be an added layer of security for our community. And with the idea that we need to just make sure that we\u2019re going into more modern times, more responsibility, more activity and as the number one port, it\u2019s only appropriate,\u201d Trevi\u00f1o said.<\/p>\n

Technology deployment<\/h2>\n

The technology would be stationed at ports of entry and includes trailer and cargo scanning equipment, along with tools that support fast-lane processing and facial recognition.<\/p>\n

Laredo Police Department Deputy Chief Edgar Garza said face ID technology could help the department offset its current shortage of roughly 80 officers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis technology will be available through the body-worn camera, which will alert officers with information about people of interest or people who have outstanding warrants. So this is already out there, and it\u2019s coming very, very fast,\u201d Garza said.<\/p>\n

Community opposition<\/h2>\n

Not everyone agrees that more law enforcement funding is the answer.<\/p>\n

Laredoan Denni Arnold told the council the community needs a different kind of investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaredo is simply not experiencing increased migration or increased crimes, such as to justify more budget for law enforcement. Second, Laredo and families would benefit far more from financial investment in those who are left behind when a loved one is taken by immigration,\u201d Arnold said.<\/p>\n

The council voted to approve the motion.<\/p>\n
