Lincoln County moves to strengthen cybersecurity<\/h2>\n

Someone was able to hack into the county government\u2019s email system, Lincoln County Administrator Daniel Calcote told the Board of Supervisors Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t get anything, but they messed with emails,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s been taken care of, but we want to improve safeguards going forward to protect employees and taxpayers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Applied Technology Group principal Shane Adams presented the board with a proposal for added security and monitoring of systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been working with Rhyan (Tranum, IT Systems Administrator) in Lincoln County for years, providing cybersecurity as needed,\u201d Adams said.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ATG works closely with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security in addressing critical infrastructure, Adams said.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIran is a big concern right now, with [coordinated] attacks,\u201d he said. \u201cIt has been stopped in Lincoln County, but that doesn\u2019t mean it will not happen again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Adams proposed expanding the County\u2019s agreement with ATG to constantly monitor systems, being proactive more than reactive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve put together a proposal for security, recovery, etc. [which] also helps with grant funds because of cybersecurity,\u201d Adams said. \u201cFederal agencies are not going to give grants to places with poor cybersecurity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Calcote said he had reviewed the proposal \u2014 a one-time cost of $12,000, plus $48,000 annually for the service.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s within the budget, and will reduce some other things, so I recommend we go ahead,\u201d the county administrator said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Board approved the upgraded software agreement unanimously.<\/span><\/p>\n
