Most CEOs are looking for the AI ROI problem in the wrong place. Forget the technology. The bottleneck is what your leaders are quietly\u00a0failing to do.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s\u00a0a scene playing out in C-suites\u00a0everywhere.<\/p>\n

The CEO signs off on the AI\u00a0investment\u00a0and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a sizable chunk of the budget. Tools get\u00a0deployed\u00a0and training rolls out. License\u00a0utilization\u00a0looks\u00a0healthy\u00a0and pilot results are encouraging.<\/p>\n

Then quarter after quarter goes\u00a0by\u00a0and the productivity numbers\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0move, or\u00a0fall far off target. Revenue stays flat, as\u00a0does\u00a0margin. The transformation never quite arrives, and no one can point\u00a0to\u00a0exactly why.\u00a0This exact sort of quiet failure is\u00a0everywhere in this AI cycle.<\/p>\n

Recent research points to just how wide the gap is from\u00a0the\u00a0promise of AI to its actual results.\u00a0Boston\u00a0Consulting Group\u2019s\u00a0(BCG)\u00a02025 study of 1,250 global firms found that only 5% of companies are capturing real value from AI. Sixty percent reported little to no benefit despite substantial investment.\u00b9 McKinsey\u2019s State of AI 2025 research shows 88% of companies use AI in at least one business function, but only 39% see any EBIT impact, and most of those see less than 5%.\u00b2 MIT\u2019s NANDA initiative analyzed 300 enterprise AI deployments and found that 95% of generative AI pilots produced no measurable P&L impact.\u00b3<\/p>\n

What employees experience on the receiving end\u00a0is also\u00a0highly\u00a0discouraging, and\u00a0deserves new attention.\u00a0Our Change Tipping Point study with The Harris Poll found that AI is now the most frequent type of change happening inside companies,\u00a0and\u00a0also\u00a0the one\u00a0leaders\u00a0rate as\u00a0hardest\u00a0to execute.\u00a0A big part of the problem is leaders\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0meeting what employees need when it comes to communicating change. Case in point:\u00a099% of business leaders\u00a0in our study\u00a0said they communicated change well, yet one in four employees disagreed or said they\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0sure.\u2074\u00a0We also found that without strong leadership communication, change is 5.5…<\/p>\n
