Stripe<\/span> Co-Founder and President <\/span>John Collison<\/span> believes that agentic commerce will completely transform online shopping.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an <\/span>interview<\/span> with Bloomberg News\u2019 Odd Lots podcast released Saturday (May 16), Collison described agentic commerce as an extension of earlier efforts to reduce <\/span>eCommerce<\/span> friction.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you find the product at the very end, do you really then want to go and be filling out <\/span>all these web form fields and things like that?\u201d asked Collinson whose company debuted its own agentic commerce offering last year. \u201cOr do you want to just say, \u2018Yeah, that sounds good, buy it for me in this size\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He argued people will want the low friction option, and that the history of technology shows that lower-friction options tend to succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so we think that clearly will happen and is happening to some degree already,\u201d said Collison, who founded Stripe with his brother, CEO Patrick Collison.<\/span><\/p>\n

Collison added that he distinguishes between mundane tasks that <\/span>AI agents<\/span> should handle (like purchasing recipe ingredients or travel adapters) and \u201cfun\u201d activities that humans want to keep, such as scrolling through online clothing selections or planning a vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n

In general, Collison said, people don\u2019t want robots to take over their \u201cscrolling jobs.\u201d He also touched on the idea that traditional <\/span>keyword search<\/span> is outdated for complex shopping like furniture or clothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s ridiculous that we got to the year 2026 relying on keyword search where that makes sense for buying a book or a DVD, where you know the title, but that\u2019s about the limit of keyword search,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, artificial intelligence allows for textual, constraint-based research, such as finding furniture that fits specific dimensions.<\/span><\/p>\n

This shift may benefit smaller, niche brands because AI models \u2014 which have \u201cread the whole internet,\u201d as Collison put it \u2014 uncover high-quality products that aren\u2019t necessarily at the…<\/span><\/p>\n
