I downloaded an AppImage, but a few days ago, when I needed it, I wasn’t quite sure where I had saved it. While I suspected the Downloads folder, it had sadly become a dumping ground for all sorts of files and screenshots. So I used the find command in my terminal.<\/p>\n

However, what struck me was that I started manually searching through the Downloads folder while waiting for find to complete. I had become used to slow file searching on Linux; I was simply not using the most efficient tool.<\/p>\n

Most Linux users first learn how to use the find command. This makes sense because it’s universally available and powerful. It also works well for precise filtering. However, we use it so often, even when it’s the wrong tool for the job.<\/p>\n

You need to understand how find actually works. ‘It performs a live crawl of your filesystem, scanning directories one by one rather than using a prebuilt index. This is fine when you don’t have too many folders or if the system is tidy. However, once files have piled up over the years, and you have large development directories or containers, you start to notice how much find stalls. The wait becomes more frustrating if you mistype a flag and have to start all over again.<\/p>\n
