It was—it’s go time,” Fangman said. Fangman explained that making an arrest in the case took longer than he would have liked and involved a fair amount of luck.At the time, officers in Newport did not have access to license plate readers, or LPRs, which are often called flock cameras.”With Gloria’s case, we could have really worked that case so much more efficiently,” Fangman said. Fangman noted that cameras that read license plates have been available for years, but the technology behind them is rapidly advancing. These cameras help police gather information about vehicles potentially involved in crimes, which can lead to criminal charges.Newport city leaders are considering purchasing six of the cameras made by Flock Safety, each costing $3,000 annually, depending on the pilot program’s results and feedback from residents. During a city commissioners meeting on Tuesday, some residents expressed concerns about privacy and data security.”Too many opportunities for this information to be misused,” said Mike Curtis, a Newport resident. Kyle Randall, another resident, said, “There’s always going to be like an open question or doubt about who has access to data when there’s a third party involved.” Fangman acknowledged these concerns, stating, “I have the same concerns. I want to know what my tax dollars are going to.” He assured residents that safeguards are in place to ensure the cameras are used appropriately. “It’s all audited. It’s for us to make sure it’s not being abused,” Fangman said. Officials clarified that features like facial recognition are not part of Newport’s plans for the cameras. They also emphasized that sharing Flock data…

Source

Newport police testing license plate reader cameras amid privacy concerns https://www.wlwt.com/article/newport-police-testing-license-plate-reader-cameras/71298203 Publish Date: 2026-05-13 18:23:00…

https://kubrick.htvapps.com/htv-prod/images/a542ec11-bf7b-4e3b-a472-c7faa22b459b.png?crop=1.00xw:0.975xh;0,0&resize=1200:*
[16

post-245450","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-privacy
