Concerns over artificial intelligence, data privacy, and the rapid approval of new data\u00a0centres\u00a0are raising questions about whether Canadians are being left out of the conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During a recent interview with West\u00a0Central\u00a0Online, Aaron Wenzel, Mayor of Leader, Saskatchewan, shared his concerns about the speed at which major AI-related infrastructure projects are being approved, particularly in Saskatchewan and across Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wenzel pointed to a recently announced data\u00a0centre\u00a0project near Regina that moved from announcement to construction within weeks, contrasting it with the lengthy approval timelines often faced by other major industries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“You know, the speed at which it’s being approved and implemented,” Wenzel said. “A pretty significant data\u00a0centre\u00a0goes from announcement to shovels in the ground in\u00a030 days.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said the rapid pace raises broader concerns about public oversight and whether governments have implemented enough safeguards surrounding artificial intelligence and data privacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wenzel referenced recent discussions surrounding AI platforms and privacy concerns, arguing there is still little provincial or federal legislation protecting Canadians’ data.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Our legislators have failed to put any meaningful safeguards in to protect the data of Canadians,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also questioned the environmental impact of expanding AI infrastructure, noting that data\u00a0centres\u00a0require significant amounts of electricity to\u00a0operate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Our federal government continues to claim that we’re in a climate crisis, yet they are\u00a0approved,\u00a0they’re OK with the approval of this data\u00a0centre,” Wenzel said. “These things use massive amounts of power.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

The conversation also touched on concerns about how AI may\u00a0impact\u00a0the\u00a0labour\u00a0market in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re left or right, your job could be on the chopping block,” Wenzel said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
