It can write essays, identify patterns, summarize research, generate images, reason through problems, and hold conversations that feel increasingly human. Yet a troubling question remains: does an intelligent system understand us, or is it simply getting better at predicting what we want to hear?<\/p>\n<p>This question matters because the challenge of advanced AI is not simply whether machines will become smarter. It is whether they will become aligned (called the alignment problem) with human life and values [1]. Alignment means more than obeying instructions. A machine can follow a rule perfectly and still produce harmful outcomes if it misunderstands the human meaning behind the rule. \u201cKeep people safe,\u201d for example, sounds straightforward. But taken literally, it could justify surveillance, restriction, or control. Human values are rarely reducible to simple commands. They are contextual, emotional, relational, and often ambiguous.<\/p>\n<p>This is where psychology becomes essential. Human intelligence is not merely calculation. It is embodied, social, emotional, and shaped by lived experience. We do not simply process information; we interpret it from a point of view. We care, fear, hope, regret, love, and imagine. Our decisions are guided not only by logic but by meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Modern AI systems can simulate many of these processes in language. They can talk about empathy, describe sadness, and explain moral dilemmas. But there is no evidence that simulation is not the same as conscious experience. A weather app can predict and describe types of rain without ever experiencing what it is like to get wet.
