{"id":242975,"date":"2026-05-10T09:06:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T13:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news-you-need.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/10\/ai-fabrications-in-legal-filings-grow-in-oregon-us\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T09:50:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T13:50:14","slug":"ai-fabrications-in-legal-filings-grow-in-oregon-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news-you-need.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/10\/ai-fabrications-in-legal-filings-grow-in-oregon-us\/","title":{"rendered":"AI fabrications in legal filings grow in Oregon, US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2026\/05\/10\/ai-oregon-law-fine-lawyer-technology-hallucinations\/\">AI fabrications in legal filings grow in Oregon, US<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2026\/05\/10\/ai-oregon-law-fine-lawyer-technology-hallucinations\/\">https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2026\/05\/10\/ai-oregon-law-fine-lawyer-technology-hallucinations\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Publish Date: <a href=\"publish_date]\">2026-05-10 09:06:00<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source Domain: <a href=\"www.opb.org\">www.opb.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>AI tools like Claude, Chat GPT and others are being misused and creating fictitious cases and quotes in legal filings in Oregon and the rest of the U.S. Photo taken April 28, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__image-by color_dgray f_s_xxs m-none\">Allison Frost \/ OPB<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">A federal judge recently fined two Oregon lawyers a total of $110,000 for filing documents full of cases and citations fabricated by Artificial Intelligence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">The fine amount was remarkable \u2014 but what led up to it was hardly a fluke. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">According to Ankur Doshi, general counsel of the Oregon State Bar, there have been approximately five identified court filings in Oregon that contained AI \u201challucinations.\u201d Nationally, that number is closer to 900. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">An AI hallucination is when a generative AI program, such as Claude or ChatGPT, generates inaccurate or misleading information, including inventing information that does not exist. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/opb-opb-prod.cdn.arcpublishing.com\/resizer\/v2\/LVBXNDQQKNGVRBL3DA4W6HNVSU.jpg?auth=2dd11049e07a3fdf5b5da512b70b2580471848470d914ac28e9f932b44bd9900&#038;width=150\" alt=\"FILE - Undated headshot of General Counsel for the Oregon State Bar Ankur Doshi.\" class=\"width_full\" style=\"aspect-ratio:927 \/ 1200;width:100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FILE &#8211; Undated headshot of General Counsel for the Oregon State Bar Ankur Doshi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__image-by color_dgray f_s_xxs m-none\">Courtesy of the Oregon State Bar<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Doshi joined OPB\u2019s \u201cThink Out Loud\u201d to dig into some of these cases, discuss why some lawyers continue to use AI despite its risks and explain how its use is shaping the legal industry. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">According to Doshi, the misuse of AI in legal cases includes non-lawyers creating their own legal documents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">\u201cBecause of the fact that generative AI tools are available to members of the public,\u201d he said, \u201cwe are seeing individuals who are representing themselves, who are going into court pro se [self-represented], using this to draft their own pleadings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">People representing themselves could face court sanctions, such as fines, for misusing AI. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">How the state bar disciplines lawyers depends on what Doshi called \u201caggravating\u201d or \u201cmitigating\u201d factors. Those factors boil down to how transparent the lawyer is about using AI and how they resolve the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">If the lawyer discloses how they used AI to the court, they may only get a slap on the wrist, Doshi said.
