The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management (OEM) launched a new public flood monitoring system Saturday to help better prepare for and respond to flooding.<\/p>\n

On May 9, officials gathered to introduce the OEM’s web-based technology that allows residents and businesses to check flood conditions across the city from their phones or computers.<\/p>\n

With flooding being one of the most common natural disasters in Pennsylvania, the OEM said this new system provides critical, real-time information to help Philadelphia residents make informed decisions to protect their families, homes and businesses from rising water than can overwhelm creeks, rivers, sewers or streets.<\/p>\n

\u201cListening to residents, addressing their concerns, and incorporating their ideas into potential solutions is critical to creating safer and stronger communities. I\u2019m proud of the inter-agency collaboration by our City departments in cooperation with our residents to provide them with the emergency awareness and preparedness tools and resources they need to be more prepared for flooding.”\u00a0said Dominick Mireles, Deputy Managing Director, Community Safety.<\/p>\n

The OEM said this initiative builds on the ongoing work in the Eastwick neighborhood, which has experienced significant flooding from tropical storms. In response, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) launched ReadyPhiladelphia Eastwick Alerts, the City\u2019s first neighborhood-targeted emergency messaging system.<\/p>\n

Officials said Saturday’s announcement is the next phase of the citywide flood technology project, which involves a pilot program that will bring added attention to rising water levels with the installation of gauges and cameras in flood prone areas. \u00a0<\/p>\n
