PHOENIX (AZFamily) \u2014 People manage multiple online accounts with login information that can be problematic. Many choose easy-to-hack passwords and use the same passwords across multiple sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other main reason that they just don\u2019t work anymore is with AI and the advent of AI, it\u2019s increasingly so efficient for hackers to target, socially engineer and target consumers and gain access to those accounts,\u201d said John Bennett, a cybersecurity expert and CEO of Dashlane.<\/p>\n

Bennett says the better option is a passkey.<\/p>\n

\u201cPasskeys, they can\u2019t be phished. They can\u2019t be guessed. And they can\u2019t be stolen,\u201d Bennett said.<\/p>\n

How passkeys work<\/h2>\n

A passkey is basically a two-part digital security key. The site has one part, unique to the URL. The user has the other.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can be a biometric or it can be a device bound pin but it will be one of those two,\u201d Bennett said.<\/p>\n

Passkeys are not available everywhere, but they are an option on many large sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe leading sites, hundreds of sites, are actively promoting and encouraging consumers to set up a passkey,\u201d Bennett said.<\/p>\n

Making the switch<\/h2>\n

To make the swap, start small.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems insurmountable to say you\u2019ve got 300 plus sites that you\u2019ve got to go fix, and so what I say is take an inventory. What are the 10 or 15 that matter most to you?\u201d Bennett said.<\/p>\n

Bennett suggests users prioritize email accounts and bank accounts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they have a passkey, set it up, but also log in and create a secure password for each of those sites,\u201d Bennett said. \u201cSmall steps. What are those top 10 or 15 sites that make you sleep better at night?\u201d<\/p>\n

There are requirements to set up passkeys. A site may need a device to meet certain software minimum requirements. There is the potential to get locked out of accounts if access to a device is lost and a backup is not set up.<\/p>\n
