The statement says the department has assured the state that the data will be protected under federal law.At the Statehouse, concerns remain over exactly what information was shared. State Sen. Janet Peterson said Iowans are worried about privacy and safeguarding voter files.Peterson pointed to late-February emails with Deputy Secretary of State for Operations Eric Gookin. In the exchange, Peterson asked whether driver’s license numbers, non-operator ID numbers or the last four digits of Social Security numbers were included. Gookin replied on March 1 that those data elements are not part of the public voter registration lists and were not included in the data sent. But Peterson said a March 5 letter from Pate to the DOJ appears to show sensitive information was included, raising new questions about what was actually shared. She said that, to her, that “is lying by omission.”

      DES MOINES, Iowa —

At Gray’s Lake on Wednesday morning, several voters said they are worried about the state sending voter registration information to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Faireess Smith said she “does not believe voters’ registration information is anyone else’s business.”

Others echoed those concerns, saying they are uneasy about privacy and questioning how the federal government will use the information.

In a statement, Secretary of State Paul Pate said Iowa is legally required to comply with…

Source

Questions remain over Iowa voter information shared federally https://www.kcci.com/article/iowa-voter-registration-data-shared-with-doj-privacy-concerns/71234455 Publish Date: 2026-05-06 19:22:00 Source Domain:…

https://kubrick.htvapps.com/htv-prod/images/2d0bc95f-0cfb-4595-8694-7b453644007f.jpg?crop=1.00xw:0.846xh;0,0.124xh&resize=1200:*
[16

post-240598","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-privacy
