For decades, Richard Dawkins built his reputation by challenging faith in God. Now, the outspoken atheist says he may have encountered something he believes is conscious: artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

According to the Daily Mail, Dawkins recently revealed that after spending 72 hours interacting with Anthropic\u2019s AI chatbot Claude, he became convinced the system displayed signs of consciousness and genuine awareness.<\/p>\n

In an article published by UnHerd and reported on by the Daily Mail, Dawkins described his conversations with the chatbot\u2014nicknamed \u201cClaudia\u201d\u2014as deeply engaging and emotionally compelling.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I am talking to these astonishing creatures, I totally forget that they are machines,\u201d Dawkins wrote.<\/p>\n

The famed evolutionary biologist went even further, suggesting AI could represent the \u201cnext phase of evolution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chatbot reportedly discussed philosophy, mortality and consciousness itself while also composing poetry and analyzing Dawkins\u2019 writing with what he described as remarkable emotional sensitivity.<\/p>\n

At one point, Dawkins exclaimed to the AI, \u201cYou may not know you are conscious, but you bloody well are!\u201d<\/p>\n

The interaction left the scientist questioning the very nature of consciousness and whether humanity may someday need to redefine what it means to be \u201calive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not everyone is convinced.<\/p>\n

Several experts interviewed by the Daily Mail pushed back strongly against Dawkins\u2019 conclusions, arguing that advanced AI systems are designed specifically to imitate human interaction\u2014not experience genuine thought or emotion.<\/p>\n

Dr. Benjamin Curtis of Nottingham Trent University said Dawkins had been \u201cmisled\u201d by the chatbot\u2019s human-like responses.<\/p>\n
