The U.S. government\u2019s AI security center will evaluate frontier models from Google, Microsoft and xAI before their release to determine whether the models\u2019 advanced capabilities pose cybersecurity risks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The newly announced plan<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> for the National Institute of Standards and Technology\u2019s (NIST)\u00a0Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) to conduct \u201cpre-deployment evaluations\u201d represents the U.S. government\u2019s most significant attempt yet to get ahead of security threats from powerful AI systems.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIndependent, rigorous measurement science is essential to understanding frontier AI and its national security implications,\u201d CAISI Director Chris Fall said in a statement. \u201cThese expanded industry collaborations help us scale our work in the public interest at a critical moment.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

NIST said the partnerships would help the agency and the tech companies exchange information, spur \u201cvoluntary product improvements\u201d and ensure the government had a \u201cclear understanding\u201d of what AI models were capable of doing. An interagency task force at CAISI will allow officials from across the government to test the models, including in classified settings.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Natasha Crampton, Microsoft\u2019s chief responsible AI officer, said in a LinkedIn post that tech companies couldn\u2019t conduct \u201cevaluations tied to national security and public safety\u201d on their own.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey require close collaboration between industry and governments with deep technical and security expertise,\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>she wrote<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, adding that Microsoft will apply what it learns \u201cdirectly into how we design, test, and deploy AI \u2014 and share best practices to help strengthen AI testing more broadly.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The arrangement represents a significant reversal for the Trump administration, which previously <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>eliminated AI security review measures<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> that it called overly burdensome.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
